Bringing Feng Shui into the Bedroom

Whether you genuinely believe in Feng Shui is unimportant. What matters is that by following the principles of Feng Shui, the result is a relaxing, peaceful, and well-presented space to enjoy. This can be particularly beneficial in the bedroom, given how the average person spends around a third of their entire life asleep.

Feng Shui is a Chinese interior design, décor, and layout philosophy that focuses on positive energy and the achievement of synergy with the natural world. According to the rules of Feng Shui, this is how to transform your bedroom into the ultimate sanctuary for rest and relaxation:

Choose the right bed

By far the largest feature in the space, it makes sense that your bed should be your primary point of focus. The rules of Feng Shui suggest that having a sensible amount of space on either side of the bed is important, ideally with plenty of space underneath to facilitate free energy flow.

Preowned beds and mattresses are best avoided, as are beds that lack a suitably sturdy headboard. Of course, nothing matters more than choosing a mattress that is suitably comfortable and supportive, in accordance with your own requirements and preferences.

Choose a soothing colour palette

Colour psychology also plays a part in creating a relaxing space, which in this instance means choosing a calming and soothing colour palette.

Feng Shui guidelines state that the colour of your bedroom should be chosen in accordance with which direction it faces. A combination of earthy colours and metallics is, for example, recommended for west-facing rooms.

But it is really not necessary to go to such extremes to make your bedroom more comforting and relaxing. Simply sticking with traditional neutral tones can help, ensuring they correspond with the furniture and fixtures in the room.

Trap the positive energy in your room

Though not always practical, Feng Shui also states that windows and doors should be closed at night to trap the energy circulating within the room.

In particular, the use of blackout blinds or window shutters is highly recommended as a way of creating a more robust barrier between the indoors and the outdoors.

Install a dimming switch

Simply being able to switch a light on or off is apparently not conducive to the guidelines of Feng Shui. Instead, it is important to create a soft and comfortable lighting effect in the bedroom, which may call for the installation of a dimmer switch.

Positioning lamps and candles around the space can contribute to the effect. You can also swap out your current bulbs for lower-output alternatives. Hanging lights and anything that could cast shadows onto the walls of bedrooms are considered bad luck, according to the rules of Feng Shui.
